Below, I have outlined my gear list, which is more aimed toward my bikepacking setup. From my series of blog posts, there will be links to this page so you can see the finer details of the gear I mention in my post. Manufacturers will supersede or discontinue gear over time, so I will only link to the manufacturer’s home page and not their specific product page.
Unless otherwise indicated, prices listed are RRP as known at the time of writing and not 100% reflective of what I paid. (as you know, its who you know and maybe I was a sponsored rider at the time, shmaybe)

Make | Specalized |
| Model | Fatboy (Late 2014) | |
| Spec | Stock until I did a ground up rebuild. See updated Spec list here See post about rebuild here |
|
| Weight | 16kg | |
| Cost | $660 (second hand) You could not buy these new in NZ, only the US sold them and the price new for a 2019 model was $3,000 USD. The Speclaized Fatboy has since been discontinued and are now very rare to find. |
|
| It was originally a Demo for an Auckland Bike shop, then owned by (kid you not), One Lady owner who listed on trademe and I purchased from her for $660 in May 2019. Took about a week to be shipped to Wensleys Bike Shop, who checked it over. I rebuilt this over the second Covid Lockdown in 2019 |

Bike Bags
Essential things to hold things so you can find things, while riding your bike thing.

Make | Revelate Designs |
| Model | Rifter Frame Bag | |
| Spec | 8.6 L | |
| Weight | 325g | |
| Cost | $320 RRP | |
| I ideally should have a waterproof frame bag, but this is the one I bought as I was getting into Bikepacking, this model is not waterproof. I did spray with Water Repellent Spray. You can get waterproof custom-made frame bags from Paper Roads Aotearoa to fit your bike frame. I generally keep the bulkier / heavy / longer items like tent poles, tent pegs, stake hammer, and bike pump in my frame bag. I also need quick access to some other stuff like Riding Vesting and Winter gloves when riding. The frame bag is perfect for tools, snacks, or heavy items. It depends on how your setup works for you. |

| Model | Feedbag | |
| Spec | ||
| Weight | ||
| Cost | $100 RRP | |
| Feedbags are great for stuffing things in the bag pockets which riding. Snack bars, Gels, keys. I normally keep my mobile phone in one bag. You can also put a water bottle in these things, but I think that looks stupid.

| Model | Flyer Sleeping Mat | |
| Spec | Insulated : Yes Length : Regular Shape : Tapered Rectangular Self-Inflating : Yes R-Value : 3.3 Thickness : 5cm Dimensions : 183 x 51cm Packed Dimensions : 25 x 17cm |
|
| Weight | 640g | |
| Cost | $200 NZD | |
| I thought this was not worth it, until I slept on it and have never looked back. Being insulated, it helps keep me warm. The trick with these matts is to get the right amount of Air in, for your level of comfort. This is the biggest item rolled up that I have to carry, I manage to jam it in my Front Bag, but it’s still bulky enough to be a pain to pack in.

Make | Nemo |
| Model | Nemo Vortex Pump Sack | |
| Spec | Packed Size: 19 x 4.5 x 1.5 cm | |
| Weight | 60g | |
| Cost | $50 RRP | |
| Simple to use and actually works well. Blow your own Air into the Pump sack, then push the air out into your Bed roll. Seems unlikely to work, but it does. I pack it in with the Sleeping Mat.

Make | Nemo 2 Man Tent |
| Model | Hornet, 2 Man Tent | |
| Spec | 3 Season Semi-Freestanding Peak Height: 98 cm, Floor Area: 2.6 sq m, Floor Dimensions: 215 x 130 x 108 cm, Vestibule Area: 0.7 sq m + 0.7 sq m |

| Weight | 878g | |

| Where they claim this a Two man tent, it’s really not suitable for two people. You would be better to each have one of these, then you have ample movement inside and around the tent so you can store your gear.

Electronics
Things that keep you connected, distracted, occupied and light your way

Make | Amazon |
| Model | Kindle Paperwhite | |
| Spec | 8GB | |
| Weight | 205g | |
| Cost | $200 NZD | |
| If you read books, this is your goto when bikepacking. My model has a backlight. Taking this one step further, if you have PDF versions of bikepacking guide books, or Maps you can view those on your Kindle. To preserve battery, keep it in airplane mode. |

Make | Apple |
| Model | 2015 Macbook Air 11″ | |
| Spec | 128 SSD, 8gb | |
| Weight | 1.09kg | |
| Cost | $300 secondhand. You can no longer buy these new. |
|
| It seems silly to take your laptop on a ride, but if you are like me and need it to do that work thing but will be riding for multiple days, then you have to. You could use a tablet. I find I’m better on a laptop. The MacBook 11″ is light and small enough to be quite portable. It would be best if you enclosed inside a waterproof protective bag for obvious reasons. |

Make | Wahoo |
| Model | Element Roam v1 | |
| Spec | Waterproof. 20 hours battery life, works with GPX files | |
| Weight | 95g | |
| Cost | $500 RRP | |
| It seems ridiculous to spend a lot of coin on a cycle computer. However, it’s not just something that will only tell you your biking speed. It’s a fully blown turn-by-turn Navigation device, like a fancy Navman GPS. This ensures I don’t get lost or go down the wrong dark street, farm tracks, hilltops, mountain passes—an essential piece of kit for long-distance riders. Wahoo tech itself is very simple to set up. Other devices connect to this, like my Heartrate monitor and Garmin Radar, but you can get Cadence and Power sensors to connect in. Units like these (Garmin does a cool one) also connect out through your phone for live map tracking. |

Make | My Zone |
| Model | M-Z1 Heart Rate Monitor | |
| Spec | ||
| Weight | ||
| Cost | $60 | |
| I totally recommend you do fitness using your heart rate as a measurement scale of effort, but also for exertion. Heart Rate Based Zone Training is not new, but it is an effective model to follow to ensure you do enough or don’t do too much. Ive seen watches do heart rate zones, but nothing beats a heart rate monitor like you know, right next to your heart. |
